From flinging poop to impress suitors and biting for attention, wildlife courting can be really weird.
#DidYouKnow Manatees are related to elephants, not dolphins or whales. Manatees are born underwater. Mothers must help their calves to the surface so that they can take their first breath, but the infants can typically swim on their own only an hour later. Happy #ManateeAppreciationDay! (As seen on National Geographic’s 1000 Days for the Planet.)
Bald Eagles are notoriously good predators, with eyesight seven times better than a human being’s and the ability to dive-bomb at over 230 miles per hour, but they’re not the only epic predator in southern New Mexico.

Photograph by @thomaspeschak All fur seal mothers have to feed in order to replenish their milk supply, so the young pups are left in so called “crèches” or “daycare” supervised by one or two experienced females – here on the South African coast a wondrous thing to see. The curious pups sometimes wander off to explore their surroundings. Namaqua National Park, Northern Cape, South Africa #wowsouthafrica

What are these monkeys doing in Florida? They were brought over from Asia in the 1930s and had no problem adapting. #WILDUntamed with @filipe_deandrade
Photograph by @thomaspeschak The African penguin is the only species of penguin that breeds on the African continent and has its home on the South African coast. This endangered bird nests on 24 islands and 3 mainland colonies in Southern Africa. Like many seabirds, penguins are perfectly streamlined for speed to catch quick prey like sardines and squid. They are famously more cumbersome on land. This industrious shuffle and their tuxedo like feathers make them one of the most unique wildlife encounters on the continent. Bird Island, Addo National Park, Eastern Cape, South Africa. #wowsouthafrica
What are rhesus macaques doing in central Florida? They were brought to the Silver River in 1939 and now the Untamed team (@filipe_deandrade + @brianmoghari + @mckenziebarney) are on a search to document them in their not-so-original habitat.

Between 13,000 and 30,000 years ago humans began domesticating dogs. They played a practical role in our everyday lives, but now they play another very important role in our lives. #dogs#cats#animals#animalsofinstagram
