Happy August! Named for Augustus Caesar, the month was originally called Sextilis, the sixth month of the Roman calendar. I like 'August' better.
A Valkyrie's-eye view of a beautiful day in Boston!
One more 'hats off to heroes' post for the week: I salute Air Force Staff Sgt. Logan Ireland, one of 15,500 transgender military members presently fighting for their country. I can't imagine Sgt. Logan being a 'burden and distraction' to anyone except maybe an enemy combatant who got in his way. I wouldn't want to be that person. You can read an interview with him from Air Force Times: https://www.airforcetimes.com/news/your-air-force/2017/07/26/transgender-airman-i-would-like-to-see-them-try-to-kick-me-out-of-my-military/. Makes me proud to be born and raised in San Antonio, 'Military City, USA,' where all Air Force personnel receive basic training. Thank you for your service!
Today, celebrating the life and service of Albert Cashier, born Jennie Hodgers, who joined the Union Army in 1862, saw action in battle under Ulysses S. Grant, was honorably discharged in 1865, and identified as male for the rest of his life. An American hero who did his part for his country!
Today, let me recommend Revolutionary, a trans author's dramatized account about his ancestor Deborah Samson, who disguised herself as a man in order to fight in the American Revolution. True story, and well told! Today Samson is remembered as an American hero.
Strawberry fields forever ...
Can't visit camp this year? Peleus is sad. But at least you can get the inside story with Camp Half-Blood Confidential!
Off to Camp Half-Blood this summer? Don't forget your copy of Camp Half-Blood Confidential (and a good pair of winged sneakers.)
