#TBT to that one time I rescued a hippo... In 2002, I went with my dad to check out this lot in Escondido, CA, where we were looking to build our house. Standing at the top of the property, I looked down this huge hill. Out of the corner of my eye I saw this huge mass moving. I shifted my gaze and peered over the neighbor's fence and the mass began to take shape. It was athis hippo! This hippo was thrashed. Had terrible sunburns and was blistered and bleeding. there was a pond of what maybe looked like a couple inches of water. No where near the amount needed for a 500 lb animal. My heart was broken for this creature.
That night I made perhaps a dozen calls to San Diego County Animal Control, the police, even to news stations with no one taking a prepubescent teen seriously. Finally, one reporter took a chance and investigated. I didn't leave my name because quite frankly, it wasn't about me, but about saving an animal in need.
15 years later... That hippo is living safely in an animal sanctuary.
