@plus81gallery is pleased to present “9066,” a solo exhibition featuring new works by artist and designer Samer Fouad. “9066” is a critical survey that compares the mass incarceration of Japanese Americans 75 years ago with the current travel ban against Muslim-majority nations. Similarly to Executive Order 9066 which resulted in the internment of more than 110,000 Japanese Americans, Trump's executive order targets thousands of lives through unconstitutional profiling in the name of national security.
In a new body of prints and installation-based works, Fouad explores WWII imagery of ostracized Japanese Americans that resonate with images from the current immigration ban. Blending and contrasting political and cultural landscapes in his unique aesthetic, Fouad reconstructs the narrative that blurs lines between two political moments in history.
I've been keeping it quiet about what I've been working on these days, lots of grant work and digging deep. I got some film back from the #riograndevalley where I've been documenting this beautiful woman and her family. This is Maria, and her daughter Jocelyl is mentally challenged. Maria is undocumented from Mexico but relies on Medicaid to cover Jocelyl's immense medical bills. She picks onions for a living and lives in a time that is increasingly uncertain for her and her family. Stay tuned for more! #texas#undocumented#mother#nobannowall
