The Serengeti is considered to be one of the most beautiful places on earth. It seems as if the entire Northern Tanzania national park is straight out of a movie. The sprawling land goes on for thousands of acres and extends into Kenya. The park itself hosts the largest terrestrial mammal migration on the planet, and with over 500 bird species and 70+ large mammal species like zebras, gazelles, and buffalos there's no question on why this place is considered one of the ten natural travel wonders of the world.
On 26 April 1964, #Tanganyika and #Zanzibar united to form the United Republic of #Tanzania. The East African country of Tanzania came into existence through the merger of two small countries, Tanganyika and the islands of Zanzibar. The capital city of the country is #Dodoma with its largest commercial city being Dar es Salaam.
The former Zanzibar #islands remain semi-autonomous and hold 5 of the country’s 30 administrative regions. The other 25 are found in the #mainland, formerly Tanganyika. The country is a one party dominant state. The current president is #JakayaKikwete.
Tanzania is the largest of the East African countries and one of the poorest countries in the world, but also one of Africa's premier #tourist destination. With attractions like Mount #Kilimanjaro, the Great Lakes, #Ngorongoro, #Serengeti#NationalPark, and the islands of #Pemba and Zanzibar, to name only some.
Shortly after independence, Tanganyika and Zanzibar merged to form the nation of Tanzania in 1964. One-party rule came to an end in 1995 with the first democratic elections held in the country since the 1970s. Zanzibar's semi-autonomous status and popular opposition have led to two contentious elections since 1995, which the ruling party won despite international observers' claims of voting irregularities.
Its first #president, Julius Nyerere, issued the 1967 #Arusha Declaration, which called for self-reliance through the creation of cooperative #farm#villages and the nationalisation of #factories, #plantations, #banks and private companies.
The Arusha Declaration and TANU’s Policy on Socialism and Self Reliance (1967), referred to as the Arusha Declaration, is known as Tanzania’s most prominent political statement of #African Socialism, ‘#Ujamaa’, or #brotherhood (Kaitilla, 2007). The Arusha declaration is divided into 5 parts: The TANU “Creed”; The Policy of Socialism; The Policy of Self Reliance; the TANU Membership; and the Arusha Resolution.
Just another amazing day in the #Serengeti.
