We had a roarsome World Lion Day as visitors helped us raise a fantastic £663.83.
Huge thanks to everyone who visited us at Lion Ridge on August 10 as we raised awareness of the threats Asiatic lions face.
Senior Keeper Sarah Evans and Keeper Adam Davey manned an information stand throughout the day, where visitors were able to find out more about the majestic species, of which there are less than 300 surviving in the wild who are restricted to the Gir Forest Wildlife Sanctuary in Western India.

Lions have been celebrated throughout history for their courage and strength. They once roamed most of Africa and parts of Asia and Europe. Today they are found only in parts of sub-Saharan Africa, except for one very small population of Asian lions that survives in India's Gir Forest.

Ever wondered how the Leo zodiac sign came to be? There are many stories, but the myth of Hercules and the Nemean Lion is by far the most famous!
Hercules, the greatest hero in Greek mythology, was given twelve difficult trials to accomplish. The first of these twelve tasks was to defeat the notorious Nemean lion, which had been terrorizing the people. The fierce Nemean lion was incredibly difficult to fight because of its impenetrable skin that could not be punctured by bronze, iron or stone.
Hercules succeeded in tracking down the Nemean lion. However, when Hercules tried to shoot it with arrows, they just bounced off the lion’s skin! Next, Hercules used his powerful sword - which also broke! Sensing the threat, the Lion then retreated into its cave. Determined not to give up, Hercules followed, blocking the cave's entrance. Hercules realized the only way to fight the Nemean Lion would be to use brute force. So Hercules put his weapons aside and began to wrestle. He used his bare hands to strangle the beast, turning the Lion's own claws against him!
Later, Hercules took the Lion’s skin and made it into a cloak of protection. The people of Nemea were very grateful to Hercules for his strength and courage.
Meanwhile, Zeus placed the Lion’s spirit amongst the stars in the sky, where, since it was no longer dangerous, it became beautiful. #doyouknowthestory#tuesdaytales
Thankfully, a small population survived as part of the #kingofmorocco 's private collection and it's their descendants that make up captive populations today. (It should be noted that even these lions weren't entirely pure blooded Barbary lions as revealed by genetic testing recently). Barbary lions were said to be larger than their southern African and Indian cousins, with larger and lighter coloured #manes that extend to their bellies and flanks.
This big guy certainly didn't disappoint.
@Regrann from @pittrack_k9 - There is a moving moment in the film Born Free, when Elsa the lioness walks across an African savannah towards the couple who hand-reared her. She had spent a week trying to fend for herself in northern Kenya. As she approaches them, they see that their experiment hasn’t worked: She is thin, bloodied and limping.
Joy and George Adamson were attempting to return the lioness they loved to the wild, but her injuries proved to George that she was unable to survive in her natural habitat. She had grown too accustomed to human care. Elsa was, in fact, no longer wild. “What’s wrong with a zoo anyway?” George asks Joy. “Is freedom so important?”
“Yes!” cries Joy with passion. “She was born free and she has the right to live free!” Today, on #WorldLionDay, we look back 60 years to George and Joy Adamson discussing the future of Elsa. Nothing has changed. These animals deserve to live life freely and unaffected by man's ignorance and greed. Today on World Lion Day, take a moment to think what life would look like without these iconic animals and so many others like them. #SaveHabitat#SaveLions#mothernature#nature#savingrhinos#antipoaching#pittrack#capturedinafricafoundation#oneteam#unitedwildlifeprotectionservices#Unitethefight#regrann
Pasangan Serasi.
