The night before, a dark storm was rising in the village, and our host's neighbor's children were gathered here. They saw us and called out "Allo!" - eager to practice their English, even with the wind and rain starting up. We called back and made silly faces for them from the nearby protected roof where our host had made us tea. They asked us questions about our lives, and if we liked to eat snails. When we told them we'd never tried them, as snails prepared as food were rare and expensive at home, they were flabbergasted. "Snails? Expensive? But you can find them in the garden!" they replied. "Let us find some snails for you to eat!" But then the storm picked up, and our host invited them to come up and have tea on our covered rooftop instead. So the kids decided to make us another favorite treat of theirs - kettle corn - and to abandon the snail-hunt in favor of getting dry.
The kids told us about how much they loved school and music, so we talked with them about what they enjoyed learning, and played some of our music for them - they started dancing to #LCDSoundSystem, didn't respond much to #FleetFoxes, and were confused by #PanthaDuPrince, which they said reminded them of cow bells.
When they told us their ages - 8 to 14 - our host mentioned that the oldest girls in the group might be teenagers, but because they still looked and acted like children rather than women, they would be allowed to continue school and not get married for a little while longer. His own wife had matured young, however, and he had married her when she was 13 and he was 21.

According to data revealed by @unicef, about 700 million women who are currently alive today were married as children, which according to the organization is younger than 18 years old, and there are at least 280 million girls who are at risk of becoming child brides.
Child marriage can have a deep and terrible impact on children and doesn't allow them to exercise their right basic human rights like the one to choose and to decide. We join the call made by UNICEF to end or at least decrease the number of children who are affected. We say no to child marriage.

The gaze of a child beggar. What do you tell to this bud of a human, that there is more to life than what he sees around him? What will he grow to be? When is too late to teach him otherwise than you can grow up to be a good man, to be a wise man, to save lives. That you don't have to earn a piece of living for your mother from playing a victim on the side of the highway. You are not a victim; you are soul to be developed -- for the better. But how? #tehrantoday
Two thirds of girls in Bangladesh are married before their 18th birthday, and two fifths before they are 15, despite the legal age being 18. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The prevalence of illegal child marriages is a debilitating factor in the lives of these young girls. When girls marry young, their education is at stake. Most end up dropping out of primary school, or not completing secondary school, and are hence dependent on their husbands for the rest of their lives. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
As the nation with the third-highest rate of child marriages in the world, Bangladesh’s economy also feels the repercussions of the impacts of less women in school and in the workforce. Yet the Bangladeshi government argues that girls who marry early are less likely to be subjected to instances of violent and sexual abuse, because they’re not out in public alone. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The government is considering lowering the legal age of marriage to 16, which would normalise instances of child marriage, and worsen the impacts women for generations. Awareness needs to be raised to prevent this issue from spiralling out of control. Women and girls need to be empowered to fight for their own rights. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Theresa Kachindamoto presides as chief of her Malawian district and its 900,000 inhabitants, a rare position for a woman and a mother of five children. And in that rare position, Kachindamoto, who was called upon to become chief 13 years ago, has done something even rarer: she’s used that position to try and save the lives of young girls in her district. She has broken up more than 850 child marriages during her tenure, and gotten 50 sub-chiefs to sign an agreement banning child marriage in the district. She’s also found a way to help families financially to keep their daughters in school, rather than sending them off into early marriages, and created a network of parents to ensure that girls are going to school, not staying home to do housework.

Child marriage is a violation of children's human rights that denies girls right to not only choose a partner and when to marry but also their education. In addition, it increases threats to their health and wellbeing - such as complications from pregnancy and childbirth.
One in three girls in the developing world, (excluding China), is married or in a union before age of 18. Child marriage is the result of poverty and gender inequality (UNFPA). #documentaryphotography#photography#document#childmarriage#genderequality#girls#education
It rained nearly all day today in Paris and so it was a perfect day for museum going. First stop was the photo exhibit by Stéphanie Sinclair called "Too Young to Wed" on the top floor of the enormous Grande Arche De La Defense. I had heard of this photo exhibit months ago and I had set my sights on going to see it. Plus it was in a building and area in Paris I had not been to. Stephanie Sinclair's 15 year project will leave you speechless and shocked. And it should. It deals with the worldwide practice (USA included) of child marriage. As young as 6! "The numbers are staggering! At least 39,000 girls married every day—that’s one girl every two seconds!". The photos are amazingly moving and disturbing. The last 2 sections of the photo exhibit dealing with brutality, abuse and female genital mutilation of these young girls left me in tears and shaken. #stephaniesinclair#tooyoungtowed#photoexhibition#grandearchedeladefense#childmarriage#womensrights#Paris#france#humanrights#nationalgeographic#architecture#neverstopexploring
We have the power to support girls who are working toward the end of child marriage. We can amplify their voices by recognizing that girls should be girls and that no society can afford the lost opportunity that child marriage causes.
