Checked out Edgar Wright's new movie. I'll be honest, I had iffy expectations cause I thought it was going to be a corny "cool" soundtrack movie, but I'm happy to report that it isn't. A lot of solid action sequences and the cast fucking kill it, particularly Kevin Spacey and Jamie Foxx. Another hit for Edgar Wright.
Just checked out Baby Driver
*here's my review
Aided by an eclectic soundtrack, a stylish and engrossing caper story and Wright's meticulously crafted look and feel, the film soars like rarely a movie of this stripe has soared before. At its height Baby Driver feels like the mordant composure of a Jean-Pierre Melville's crime thriller is being spun around on a Looney Tune Acme thingamajig. It sounds like it shouldn't work but after seeing what is most definitely the best crime comedy in years, having this particular mix of awesome is the equivalent of accidentally getting chocolate in your peanut butter.
The film sets itself at the center of a criminal underworld dominated by greed and ego. Yet the world of Baby (Elgort) feels unnaturally bright by comparison. And why shouldn't it be; He's only a job or two away from retiring as an infinitely skilled getaway driver. A driver whose handler (Spacey) trusts him enough to shuttle his various criminal enterprises in and around the L.A. downtown loop. "I never work with the same crew twice, except for you," says Spacey in a rare moment of rare avuncular appreciation. Baby in-turn answers with Monsters, Inc. (2001) quotes. He's one foot out the door and clearly happy to be.
As with all movies of this kind, things don't go exactly according to plan. A plot point that looms larger as Baby starts dating a peppy waitress named Debora (James) who shares his love of music. It's a love of necessity as the music is used to drown out his tinnitus, as well as having the duel purpose of being getaway driving focus fuel and a framing device for the audience.
And what remarkably obsessive frames we end up going through. To point out that Baby Driver has a handful of incredible car chases verges on the obvious. Yet what the trailer might not tell you about are the various visual and audio cues that create an echo chamber of gags, setups, callbacks, pacing devices and tension builders. They're meant to please the ears and tickle the brain!!
Baby Driver ~ R ~ 2017 ~ #EdgarWright#AnselElgort#LilyJames#KevinSpacey#JamieFoxx#JonHamm#EizaGonzález#CJJones#JonBernthal A skilled getaway driver who enjoys listening to music is determined to escape his dangerous lifestyle to pursue a girl. Edgar Wright directed this movie, so could you really expect anything less than a 4 for my rating? While this film took more of a dramatic focus on its story than Wright's usual stylized comedy, it was still effective nevertheless. The story was very well written with some extremely complex characters I was consistently encompassed to see on screen. My only problem might be with the fact that this movie pays a little to much homage to the films it is clearly trying to tribute. At times, I felt like I knew exactly where the story was going & it didn't always feel entirely original. Nevertheless, I was emotional invested throughout, & had to restrain myself as my heart raced all through the third act. I thought every performance was noteworthy, but I do think Spacey & Hamm deserve extra acknowledgements. The action was awesome, but the most notable factor was the fantastic soundtrack. I am literally downloading nearly every track as I write this review. The edits often matched the beats of the songs, complimenting the music & bringing closer attention to the effective tracks. Honestly this film felt like an epic two hour music video & I loved every second of it. Sure, I could find a few scattered errors with the film, but when I had such a fun time experiencing it, why bother? Go see it in theaters now! 4.5/5 #BabyDriver#baby#driver#music#songs#carchase#cars#Ansolo#action#drama#comedy#funny#movie#film#moviereview
Along your journey, there will be many criticisms and periods of self doubt. Be grateful for those times. The strength you gain from them in immense. When you look back you'll be happy to know you chose to persevere rather than give up. Tag a friend who never gives up!
One of the best films of the year? #BabyDriver is the new film from writer/director #EdgarWright, & tells the story of Baby( #AnselElgort), the best getaway driver in the business as he is forced into one more mission. The films KICK ASS. It's fast, action-packed, funny, touching, dramatic & intense. All the ingredients you need for one hell of a great movie. Wright still directs with style. His writing: on point. His action: badass. His story: twists & turns all the way. His taste in music: phenomenal.
Let's talk about the amazing cast. Everyone is great. From Elgort's innocence to #JamieFoxx's evilness, & from #LilyJames' kindness to #KevinSpacey's threatening character. Let's not forget #JonHamm and #EizaGonalez's lovely relationship. Baby's deaf foster dad is also good, giving us emotions through sign language. My only nitpick is there wasn't enough #JonBernthal, I really wanted more of him because..he's a badass.
The action is intense and never does it slow down. The car chases are glorious. Really fast & really furious. None of that Fast&Furious CGI shit. Ok, this movie does use CGI, but it's limited & we get some impressive stunt work. The camera follows the cars as they go through busy streets & highways. Oh right, there ain't all that fast & stupid clumsy editing, A+.
The soundtrack: beautiful. The movie uses music for just about everything. Intense car chase, use a fast paced song. Happy moment, use a smooth relaxed song. Music is so good, I went off and got myself the vinyl. It's that beautiful.
Positives: A good protagonist in Ansel. The guy was really spot on. The cast is great, the action is eye catching. The soundtrack, of course, & the directing & writing is brilliant.
Negatives: Quite a few coincidences, can't spoil them, & again, not enough Berntal.
Baby Driver is a great, great movie. Best film of the year so far. Two Thumbs Up. Enjoy, and like always, this is SirMovieGeek telling you to Geek On!! #geekingout#moviereviews#filmlovers#moviecommunity#onekillertrack
