REWATCHED: JARHEAD (2005) "A story. A man fires a rifle for many years. and he goes to war. And afterwards he comes home, and he sees that whatever else he may do with his life - build a house, love a woman, change his son's diaper - he will always remain a jarhead. And all the jarheads killing and dying, they will always be me. We are still in the desert." Sam Mendes's JARHEAD is quite the sobering war drama. In this sense, your expectations take an about face as you're met with a film about being bored and agitated in the desert instead of the typical shoot em up war movies we're accustomed to. And to me, it's one of the very best of its genre in the past decade.
What Mendes achieves is nothing short of thought provoking. Although I am not a Marine and cannot personally relate to the different kind of training they receive, I can identify with what he's going for here. The madness that comes with not having anything to do after spending so long learning how to kill, learning that you need to kill, and learning you absolutely want to kill. Something. Anything. What then does the Marine do, but wait indefinitely for their opportunity to strike? Its this mindset that drives Swofford on the brink of insanity, but he isn't alone.
Believe it or not, Jarhead is also effortlessly hilarious and when need be, suspenseful. There's really not a single combat scene to be found, mostly men wandering around/waiting in the desert, which is oddly more transfixing than a firefight could have been. And hot damn, does Roger Deakins capture some absolutely beautiful shots. Jake Gyllenhaal is a ticking time bomb of pent up emotions, you can't take your eyes off him. Same for the movie. It plays with your head while still retaining a meditative spirit that leaves on a quietly, unsettling note.
