Time Magazine - I was shocked to scroll along Facebook only to find this article, which I assumed to be "fake news", until I clicked on the link to look at it. Sure enough, it was real and I was blasted with the line, "Women should probably cool it with the eyeliner."
I've been a professional makeup artist for years, a member of the beauty industry since 2009 and a woman my entire life. I own and operate my own beauty business, one whose goal is to empower women through creative expression using makeup. As a woman, and makeup enthusiast, I have always believed that makeup artistry was just as valid as any other form of art and to myself, my friends, and my clients, it is an INCREDIBLE tool for self-esteem boosting.
I can tell you this - makeup is not and never will be used by women FOR men. We won't let you take that power from us. We won't let you dictate our own feelings and desires and we won't let you tell us how to create.
The "before and after" photos featured in your artivle are laughable - as a pro-MUA, I can tell you that the women in the "before" photos are indeed wearing makeup including, concealer, foundation, brow filler and mascara. Your article perpetuates the ridiculous and unrealistic beauty standards that men hold women to by falsely leading men to believe women really look like that without makeup on. When we don't wear makeup, we asked if we are sick. If we don't airbrush our skin or Photoshop out blemishes, we are asked why we look different in real life versus they way we look in photos online.
I'm sorry to have believed you were a free-thinking, reputable news source. I will no longer be able to respect the opinions and reporting of your publication or your staff after reading this trash news article, regardless if it was meant to bring light to "scientific research" - you should know better. This proves to me that you are no better than the insecure, orange misogynist that temporarily hangs out in our oval office. #time#timemagazine#makeup#makeupisart
