With school starting in the next few weeks, students need to be fully equipped with a pen in hand and a fresh new notebook ready to go to take notes! ⠀
As the owner of a LearnforLess Tutors and an Alumni from Ryerson University, I've developed a set of specific skills that I have taught and shared not only with my current tutors, but many of our students as well. The skill? NOTE-TAKING. ⠀
Why is note-taking so important? Well, it saves time - you don't have to look back or re-read any prior information, it helps with organization - it makes it very easy to find, and it increases mental retention - helps you learn key concepts faster. ⠀
Here are my PERSONAL note-taking tips and skills I have learned over the last 9 years being in an educational institution: ⠀
Highlight as less as possible! You want to have a light handed-touch with a highligher because it's power is decreased if it's overused (Max. 5-6 words) - IF you have more than 5-6 imporant words, underline the entire sentence with a pen. ⠀
Colour code your notes! This saved me throughout High School, University, and STILL to this day! For large amounts of information and different topics use different coloured folders. Use different coloured notebooks for different subjects, and even different coloured pens - one for titles, one for sub-titles, and one for the actual information. ⠀
Know your learning style! Everyone learns differently. We know that. I'm a visual learner so I have to physically read and note-take at the same time. However, if you're an autitory learner you might want to record the lesson/lecture and playback the information and note-take (Smartphones have built-in recorders now). ⠀
Only read through the inforatiom ONCE when taking notes! Take notes as you read, it actually helps you retain the information a lot quicker than having to go back and reading it a few more times. ⠀
So there you have it, my Top 4 note-taking tips and skills I've attained throughout my educational career I hope they help you in and out of the classroom/lecture hall! They sure helped me!
