I think Julian Cope wrote it best in his 2007 Jap Rock sampler:
"Nihilistic doom folk in advance of the third Velvet Underground album.... Imagine Love's 'Signed DC' played by a free jazz ensemble intent on uniting the Communist Blog rage of 'European Sun' with a shed building competition.".... "Opening song Marianne is an incredible minor key death dirge about an undead woman who emerges from the stormy seas to seize the unsuspecting singer and drag him to his doom." Free jazz drumming, flute, and that guitar tone! A must listen. #records_feature
On the "Crooked rain" album, Pavement were singing : "I want a ranged life, if i can settle down..." The second line is the important one. Sometimes life is so complicated that it prevents you from settling down.Art by Mike Joyce.
