'Achieving gender equality is about disrupting the status quo - not negotiating it.' - Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, executive director of @unwomen .

There seems to be this misconception that we’ve got enough freedom and people standing in protest agitate just for the sake of agitating. That the issues of social injustice are not real, but imaginations conjured up in the stubborn minds of those who perceive themselves to be oppressed. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
There is also this other school of thought that the struggle for freedom ended with the end of segregation in Jim Crow terms or when apartheid ended in South Africa or when European colonizers departed from our African shores. I don’t know what other way it can be said, but freedom is not some one time liberty blank check that we cash to receive all the available freedom at once for a lifetime. It doesn’t work like that, freedom is a struggle fought by every generation. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
With each passing struggle the needle moves forward with the hope of actually achieving an equitable society. It’s not a one time once and for all pay off, it is a constant etching away at the pillars of power that strive to silence us. In the words of Angela Davis and many other fighters before me : Freedom is a CONSTANT struggle!
